Nitric acid (HNO₃) is a highly corrosive, fuming, and toxic mineral acid that is colorlessly pure but turns yellow with age due to decomposition into nitrogen oxides and water. Also known as spirit of nitre or aqua fortis, it is a strong oxidizing agent and a fundamental reagent in various industrial processes. Its primary uses include the manufacturing of fertilizers and explosives, and it serves as a strong oxidizing agent in rocket fuel.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Key Characteristics
  • Chemical Formula: HNO₃
  • Appearance: Pure nitric acid is colorless, but it often appears yellow due to the presence of dissolved nitrogen oxides from decomposition.
  • Corrosivity: It is highly corrosive and toxic, causing severe burns upon contact with skin.
  • Odor: It has an irritating odor.
  • Strong Oxidizing Agent: Nitric acid readily adds oxygen to other substances and can cause explosive reactions.
  • pH: It is a strong acid with a low pH.
Uses and Applications
  • Fertilizers: A primary use is in the production of ammonium nitrate, a key component of fertilizers.
  • Explosives: It is a crucial ingredient in the manufacture of explosives, including TNT and nitroglycerin.
  • Industrial Processes: It is used in nitration to create organic compounds and in the manufacturing of plastics and dyes.
  • Rocketry: It functions as a powerful oxidizer in liquid-fueled rockets.
  • Medical: In its pure, unadulterated form, it can be used as a caustic agent to remove warts and other skin growths.
Safety Considerations
  • Toxicity: Nitric acid is toxic and can cause severe coughing, chest pain, and shortness of breath if its vapors are inhaled in significant amounts.
  • Skin Contact: Direct contact with skin results in severe corrosive burns.
  • Reactivity: It reacts with bases, metals, and metal oxides to form nitrate salts.

BNPA or 2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide is a quick-kill biocide that easily hydrolyzes under both acidic and alkaline conditions. It is preferred for its instability in water as it quickly kills and then quickly degrades to form a number of products, depending on the conditions, including ammonia, bromide ions, dibromoacetonitrile, and dibromoacetic acid. DBNPA acts similar to the typical halogen biocides.

DBNPA is used in a wide variety of applications. Some examples are in papermaking as a preservative in paper coating and slurries. It is also used as slime control on papermachines, and as a biocide in hydraulic fracturing wells and in cooling water.
